Summer/Fall Part-time Legal Externship - $20/hour

INTERNSHIP ALERT MAN.png

The National Employment Law Project (NELP) seeks one 2019 summer/fall legal extern to conduct research into law and policy regarding contracted workers (i.e., the treatment of workers as employees or independent contractors, or hiring them through labor intermediaries like temp and staffing firms). The position is paid. Students will work 10-20 hours a week over a four-month period, under supervision of a NELP attorney in Seattle, but will work remotely.

The student will work with NELP’s Work Structures team, which aims to reverse the trend towards “nonstandard” work as a key driver of eroding labor standards, rising income and wealth inequality, persistent structural racism and occupational segregation and the shifting of power away from workers and toward corporations.

The paid externship position during the 2019 summer/fall semester is for approximately 250 hours of work, with a flexible schedule to be determined by the candidate and supervisor. The externship will focus on our work researching and developing policies to address the rise of outsourcing, the “gig economy,” and contingent work structures (“the fissured economy”) to ensure fair wages and job quality.

Applicants must have at least one year of law school, a demonstrated commitment to economic and social justice, excellent legal research and writing skills,  and the ability to work independently.
