This position of located in the District of Columbia Department of General Services (DGS), Office of External Affairs. The Department of General Services (DGS) manages the capital improvement and construction program for District government facilities; real property for District government use; management of space in buildings operated or leased by District government for selling and leasing other District real property; and for providing building services for facilities owned or operated by the District. This purpose of this position is to develop and conduct a program of public information on all aspects of DGS.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position functions as Public Affairs Specialist, primarily responsible for communicating, collecting, assembling, preparing, and disseminating information to the staff, media and general public  through diverse media forms such as print, electronic, digital/social, and online media. The incumbent is also responsible for assisting management in the planning, development, and assessment of informational materials and communication strategies, utilizing diverse media forms, as needed to increase public awareness and acceptance of agency goals, decisions, policies, procedures, activities, etc. related to the functions of the agency.

The incumbent utilizes online state of the art software and information technology such as graphic software, websites, webcasts, blogs, and podcasts to establish an Internet presence for public affairs/relations campaigns. Develops and maintains relationships with reporters, community members, consumers, and government officials, and others to promote agency goals, positions, activities, etc., as appropriate. Participates in the reviews potentially controversial or sensitive correspondence, and works with staff  to ensure that agency communications distributed comply with governmental regulations and procedures. Assists with internal and external agency events.
