Inga Saffron: 'Not Every Commercial Corridor is Worth Saving'

Crafting Corridors: Reinventing the Urban Street was presented by Next City on February 16, 2013 at the Philadelphia Center for Architecture. Each speaker had just ten minutes to pitch their approach to transforming downtown streets into vibrant, liveable corridors.

Inga Saffron, architecture critic at the Philadelphia Inquirer and columnist with The New Republic, offered opening remarks, speaking about our fixed idea of what commercial corridors should be. The way we shop has changed and our commercial corridors are in a state of flux. Reality is, not all of our corridors can and should be brought back to life, and its important to have a conversation about what is salvageable and what investments our neighborhoods really need.
