Sept 15 | The Anacostia Coordinating Council invites you to a special reception
On September 15, 1963, 18 days after the March on Washington, Americans were again jolted by racist violence when the bombing of a Birmingham, Alabama church killed four girls at 10:22 a.m. Also, on that fateful day in Birmingham another two black youths were murdered by whites who served no time for their crimes.
On Sunday, September 15, 2013, 10 a.m., at the Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ, 3845 South Capitol Street, SW, a memorial service will be held in remembrance of that fateful day. After the service, the Anacostia Coordinating Council will host a reception at the church, which will open an exhibit of 14 quilts about the violence in Birmingham (see the press release below). The artists will be on hand to discuss their works. Also, the first 100 attendees at the reception will receive complimentary DVDs of the Emmy Award winning documentary Mighty Times: The Children's March, which chronicles the heroic roles that African American children played in the civil rights struggle in Birmingham.

Suffer the Little Children…Remembering Birmingham
Sunday, September 15 through Saturday, October 12, 2013
A powerful and soul-stirring display of quilts will hang in the Fellowship Hall of Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ. This exhibit is in memory of four little girls killed during the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, at 10:22 am, on Sunday, September 15, 1963, while preparing to go to Sunday School. Their death was a seminal moment in the Civil Rights Movement that touched this nation and the world.
WHO: The Anacostia Art Quilters are an offshoot of the Daughters and Sons of Dorcas, which is believed to be the oldest African American quilting society. The exhibit is an expression of 14 members who hand stitched by the DC group which is thought to be the oldest African American quilting group, shows the works of 14 craftswomen.
WHAT: The exhibit opens on Sunday, September 15, at 1:00 pm, commemorating the 50th anniversary of this event that helped spearhead the 1963 Civil Rights Movement. Each quilt is designed with pictures and other accessories on hand-and-machine-stitched fabrics on exquisite backgrounds and fancy borders. Each gives an interpretation of the story.

WHY: 50th Anniversary of the Birmingham bombing, same year as the March on Washington and relative to the formation of the Civil Rights Movement. Innocent girls sacrificed at the cost of our freedom should never be forgotten, for we stand on their shoulders.
