Giant Announces It’s Academic’s 50th Anniversary Reusable Bag Design Contest
Open to High School Students in Maryland, Virginia, and D.C.; Deadline Oct. 31

Landover, Md. (September 27, 2010) – To celebrate the 50th anniversary of It’s Academic, Giant Food will sponsor a reusable shopping bag design contest. Open to high school students in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., entries will be accepted October 1 through 31. The winning design will be printed on reusable bags, to be sold in Giant stores across the region. Proceeds from the bags will benefit the A+ School Rewards program which schools use to enhance and supplement their budgets.

It’s Academic has been challenging the region’s high school students to answer tough questions about a variety of topics including history, literature, science, math, sports, current events, and more since the 1960s. The Guinness Book of World Records has recognized the program as the world’s longest running TV quiz show.

“Giant has been a long time supporter of It’s Academic and we’re very excited about this reusable bag design contest to celebrate a momentous anniversary. We’ve watched our region’s students excel as they have answered tough questions on It’s Academic for years,” said Robin Michel, president of Giant Food of Landover, Md. “Now we’re excited to see their artistic abilities, as they use their talents to create a memorable anniversary bag that shoppers can use to help our environment.”

All reusable bag design entries must fit in a 12 inch by 12 inch square; incorporate Giant’s four colors (yellow, red, purple, and green – additional colors are allowed); include program title It’s Academic; and reference the 50th anniversary.

In addition to having their art printed on thousands of reusable bags, the contest winner will receive a $1,500 cash scholarship. Second and third place winning artists will receive $750 and $500 cash scholarships respectively. Winners will be announced in early December.

The reusable bag design contest judges include art professors and art department directors from Montgomery College, Morgan State University, Northern Virginia Community College, Prince George’s Community College, and University of the District of Columbia. Judges will evaluate contest entries based on appropriateness to theme, craftsmanship, composition, color combination, and creativity and originality.

All entries must be accompanied by an entry form and emailed to bagcontest@giantofmaryland.com. For entry form and complete contest rules, please visit www.giantfood.com/bagcontest .
