WASHINGTON - The District Department of Transportation is offering free shuttle service between Anacostia High School and Anacostia Pool/Fitness Center to keep children from crossing I-295/DC 295 on foot.

DDOT is also enlisting the help of parents and the community to educate children about the dangers of crossing I-295/DC295, or any high speed roadway, on-foot.

DDOT is temporarily providing the shuttle service while the pedestrian bridge across DC 295, between the high school and fitness center, is rebuilt.

The shuttle service starts and ends at Anacostia High School, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Service at the Pool/Fitness Center runs Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 12:15 to 8 p.m. The Shuttle makes a complete loop every 30 minutes.

At the same time, DDOT is reaching out to parents and the larger community for help in preventing children from crossing I-295/DC295 on-foot. Crossing highways is dangerous and illegal. If you see children walking toward the highway, please stop them, talk about the dangers and tell them about the shuttle or another safe route of travel.

DDOT is also coordinating with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to increase patrols near I-295/DC 295 and to have officers talk to children as well.

For more information regarding the shuttle service or the 11th Street Bridge Project, please contact Public Information Manager Bryon Johnston at 202-484-2330, ext. 137 or visit their website
