"I am Ward 8" is back! June's profile focuses on Kellie Armstead of the Washington Highlands neighborhood. You may already be familiar with Kellie from her work with the River East Emerging Leaders (r.e.e.l.) or from her blog, That Kellie Girl. "That Kellie girl" is vivacious, witty, committed, cultured and creative. She is another excellent addition to the Ward 8 community. I've had the pleasure of knowing Kellie and she always comes with a bright smile, a kind word and a positive attitude.

2. Your Neighborhood?
Washington Highlands
I knew that I wanted to live in D.C. I felt that if I didn't purchase soon, eventually I would be priced out of D.C altogether. My realtor suggested Ward 8 (Washington Highlands), and I liked the look of my street, the affordability, convenient location and especially my neighbors.
4. How long have you lived in Ward 8?
3 years now
5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about Ward 8?
The biggest misconception is that Ward 8 isn't a vibrant and thriving community. We have allowed our challenges to overshadow the positive happenings in our community. The rich African-American history, strong neighborhood bonds, beautiful vistas and so much more comprise Ward 8. Each ward has their challenges of crime, economic development, poverty, education, etc. However, all wards should have the same opportunities to grow and develop. For too long, Ward 8 has been exploited, neglected and abandoned. We must have standards for what we will and will not allow in our communities. If it doesn't have a real and positive impact on the community, then it doesn't belong in Ward 8.
6. What is your favorite thing about Ward 8?
My favorite thing about Ward 8 is the people-- of course. I love the people that I meet in the neighborhood. There is a myriad of characters. At times, I feel like I am in the middle of a novel! I love each person's unique story and perspective. This is what makes life so much richer and interesting.
There are several things I desire for Ward 8-- improving the schools and youth programs; encouraging healthy eating and fitness, and supporting community businesses. However, the biggest thing I desire is LITTER FREE STREETS. I believe one of the more easiest ways to beautify your neighborhood is picking up trash. We need to encourage residents to stop littering. It is a great way to show pride for your community.
8. Which do you prefer? East of the River, East Washington or River East?
I like East Washington and River East. However, I prefer River East.
