Hmmm...How do I say this? CM Mendelson perhaps this roundtable would be more effective if 1) it was held in the community where the shootings occured 2) the meeting wasn't at 9:30am on a Monday morning. People EotR do work and go to school.

*Sometimes I wonder about our elected officials and their connection to the community. My "community view" on the South Capital Street shootings in Washington Highlands is that elected officials shouldn't make it so hard for the community to participate on the roundtable.  Come to our community, come at a time when it is more likely we can participate. I haven't made an endorsement but I have to admit that I have seen Clark Ray, candidate in the race for the at-large seat currently occupied by Mendelson far more than I have seen Mendelson - to be honest I haven't seen Mendelson in my neighborhood at all. Makes me wonder.

Councilmember Phil Mendelson, Chairperson of the Committee on Public Safety and the Judiciary, announces a public oversight roundtable on Community Views on the March 30, 2010 South Capitol Street Shootings. The public hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m. on April 19, 2010 in Hearing Room 120 of the John A. Wilson Building.


The purpose of this roundtable is to hear testimony from family and friends of the victims as well as the public, regarding the recent mass shooting March 30, 2010 on South Capitol Street that killed or wounded nine people. The roundtable will also contemplate strategies to address this violence or prevent similar retaliatory incidents in the future.


Those who wish to testify should contact Ms. Heidi Tseu, Committee Clerk or Ms. Deborah Kelly, Legislative Clerk, at (202) 724-7808, by fax at (202) 724-6664, or via e-mail at dkelly@dccouncil.us, and provide their name, address, telephone number, organizational affiliation and title (if any) by close of business Thursday, April 15, 2010. Persons wishing to testify are encouraged, but not required, to submit 15 copies of written testimony. If submitted by the close of business on Thursday, April 15, 2010 the testimony will be distributed to Councilmembers before the hearing. Witnesses should limit their testimony to five minutes; less time will be allowed if there are a large number of witnesses.


If you are unable to testify at the hearing, written statements are encouraged and will be made a part of the official record. Copies of written statements should be submitted either to Ms. Kelly, or to Ms. Cynthia Brock-Smith, Secretary to the Council, Room 5 of the Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20004. The record will close at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 3, 2010.
