Friends of the National Arboretum (FONA) seeks an energetic, hard working, collaborative individual to lead the garden operations at our one-acre demonstration garden in the U.S. National Arboretum (USNA) and five school gardens in Washington, D.C. This position requires a unique set of skills compared to other agricultural work because of the dual importance for the gardens to grow food and be top-notch teaching and demonstration facilities for thousands of visitors annually (i.e. school children, Arboretum visitors, home gardeners, families, etc.). The Garden Manager is a core member of our Washington Youth Garden program team (1 of 4 full-time staff) and responsible for planning, designing, and maintaining our garden spaces, as well as supporting higher level decision making on program direction and annual priorities.

The Garden Manager is in charge of annual and perennial crop production, specialty gardens (ornamental and pollinator plants), and our nature play area. They ensure that a safe environment is maintained and that all gardens are productive, engaging and educational. The Garden Manager will supervise seasonal staff and volunteers, and work closely with FONA and USNA staff.

The mission of the Washington Youth Garden is to nurture curious minds and healthy bodies by connecting youth to food, the land, and each other.
