The American Council on Education (ACE) represents the interests of campus executives and leaders of higher education associations and organizations. ACE provides leadership on key higher education issues and influences public policy through advocacy, research, and programmatic initiatives.

ACE’s Internship Program is a cohort experience reporting to the Office of the President, and interns are assigned to various departments throughout the Council. The program is designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students ‘real-world’ work experience within a leading national higher education association. The fall 2019 cohort will include professional development sessions with current ACE staff, a DC outing, and presentations at the conclusion of the program. The internship program is inclusive of all learners and is aligned with ACE's Strategic Framework.

Job duties and requirements for specific internship experiences in the fall of 2019 are listed below. Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or have recently completed, an undergraduate or graduate degree program.

  • Advancement (Fundraising) Internship: The advancement internship includes enhanced data management, writing, critical thinking and research skills, coupled with facilitating an increase in understanding of the Non-Profit Advancement profession. The advancement intern will conduct research on foundations, corporations and other entities supporting equity, access and completion for postsecondary education students. The intern also will work closely with the Advancement specialist on data management and grants management. The intern will also gain familiarity with fundraising strategies and tactics related to engaging corporations and foundations. Lastly, the intern will help to review and edit concept papers, sponsorship and grant proposals. In addition to activities directly related to ACE, Advancement will provide opportunities for the Intern to meet with other NGOs in the D.C. region as an introduction on their advancement activities.

  • Office of the President Internship: The selected individual will gain knowledge of the latest challenges/issues in higher education, enhance their research and writing skills and increase their familiarity with presenting their research. The Office of the President intern will conduct research on public policy, assist in drafting talking points for the President’s various speaking engagements, and brainstorm additional methods of member engagement. The office of the president seeks an intern who has an interest in higher education, a curiosity about Washington, DC and public policy, and the ability to have fun in a fast-paced environment.
