(Washington, DC) -- The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced it is accepting permit applications for the annual PARK(ing) Day, which will take place Friday, September 15, 2017. The event highlights the District’s sustainability efforts and kicks off car-free day activities in the region. Launched in 2005 in San Francisco, Calif., PARK(ing) Day has spread to cities around the world as residents and businesses create temporary parks in metered parking spaces. More than 30 “pop-up” parks were created in the District as part of the event last year. The deadline to apply for a permit is Tuesday, August 29, 2017.
“DDOT is proud to support PARK(ing) Day, which gives the District of Columbia another opportunity to implement Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Sustainable DC Plan and further the District's goal of making DC the greenest, healthiest, and most livable city in the nation,” said DDOT Director Leif Dormsjo.
PARK(ing) Day is open to anyone seeking to sponsor a seven-hour temporary park. The parks will be limited to metered parking locations without time-of-day restrictions and should be located in the middle of blocks for safety reasons. Participants will be responsible for the cost of materials or permitting fees associated with the temporary parks and will be responsible for cleaning up the spaces after the event.
