TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Apollo 50: Go for the Moon

On Friday, July 19, 2019 and Saturday, July 20, 2019, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s trip to the moon with a 17-minute show, Apollo 50: Go for the Moon. This event will take place on the National Mall with a free 17-minute show to run three times on both nights: 9:30 p.m., 10:30 p.m., and 11:30 p.m. For this event, the image of the Saturn V rocket will be projected on to the east side of the Washington Monument beginning on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 through Saturday, July 20, 2019. 

In conjunction with this event, there will be several street closures that motorists should take into consideration along with amplified sound during the 17-minute show:

Amplified sound

On Monday, July 15, 2019 and Tuesday, July 16, 2019, the public should expect periodic sound checks by the production team for this weekend’s event. The sound checks will include songs, speaking parts, and the recreation of the launch of the Saturn V rocket. On Friday, July 19, 2019 and Saturday, July 20, 2019, the audio will be played for the duration of each 17-minute show and will include the sound of the rocket launching. 

 No Parking Locations

 The following streets will be posted as Emergency No Parking for the event on Friday, July 19, 2019 and Saturday, July 20, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.: 

  • Madison Drive from 15th Street to 7th Street, NW

  • Jefferson Drive from 15th Street to 7th Street, SW 

Street Closures
The following streets will be closed for the event on Friday, July 19, 2019 and Saturday, July 20, 2019 from approximately 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.:

  • Madison Drive from 15th Street to 7th Street, NW

  • Jefferson Drive from 15th Street to 7th Street, SW

The following streets will be closed for the event on Friday, July 19, 2019 and Saturday, July 20, 2019 from approximately 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.:

  • 14th Street from Independence to Constitution Avenue, NW

  • 15th Street from Independence to Constitution Avenue, NW

All street closures and listed times are subject to change based upon prevailing or unexpected conditions.

The public should expect parking restrictions along the street and should be guided by the posted emergency no parking signage. All vehicles that are parked in violation of the emergency no parking signs will be ticketed and towed.

Motorists could encounter possible delays if operating in the vicinity of this event and may wish to consider alternative routes. The Metropolitan Police Department and the D.C. Department of Transportation also wishes to remind motorists in the vicinity of this event to proceed with caution as increased pedestrian traffic can be anticipated.
