Nov 2 | MahoganyBooks and Very Smart Brothas Book Club
From our friends at MahoganyBooks:
Our October book club read is The Fire Next Time written by the incomparable James Baldwin. This book was a national bestseller when it first appeared in 1963 and galvanized the nation by giving a passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement. “At once a powerful evocation of James Baldwin’s early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice, the book is an intensely personal and provocative document. It consists of two “letters,” written on the occasion of the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation, that exhort Americans, both black and white, to attack the terrible legacy of racism.”
With that in mind we invite you to join MahoganyBooks and Very Smart Brothas for our joint book club as we read and discuss The Fire Next Time over the next few weeks. On November 2, 2018 from 6 PM to 8PM at MahoganyBooks, located inside of the Anacostia Arts Center. The book discussion will happen in three phases:
In the lead up to Nov. 2nd, a Facebook Group will be available for you to share your thoughts and impressions.
On Nov 2nd, #DiscussionDay, MahoganyBooks will open it’s door for an open, engaging, & respectful dialogue.
Additionally, the discussion will be livestreamed to the Facebook Group so people can join in on the conversation from afar.
