The Ruby Bridges Literacy Academy is an initiative in tribute to Ruby Nell Bridges, who at the age of six, was the youngest of a group of Black students to integrate schools in the American South.

Ruby Nell integrated the 1st grade at William Frantz Elementary in New Orleans, La on November 14th, 1960. At a crucial point in her reading development. We want to show her our appreciation for her courage, and use her living example to inspire Young Black Girls to love and appreciate the gift of reading.

#TheRBLA functions as a book club, mentor program and opportunity to give back.  Our older participants are asked to serve as mentors to #RubyReaders (4-12) by reading with them and earning community service hours in a truly meaningful way.

Participants will advance their reading skills and grow in their cultural awareness by using materials written, illustrated and dedicated to Black Girls.

We utilize the local library system to highlight this still valuable community resource to this generation of readers.

FREE snacks, books, and membership for the BGT Book Club!

ALL girls ages 4-18 are welcome (under 4 w/ an adult).
