Brandi Summers talks about her book, Black in Place: The Spatial Aesthetics of Race in a Post-Chocolate City. The book documents D.C.'s shift to a "post-chocolate" cosmopolitan metropolis by charting H Street's economic and racial developments. In doing so, she offers a theoretical framework for understanding how blackness is aestheticized and deployed to organize landscapes and raise capital. 

Summers is an assistant professor of African American Studies and associate director of engagement with iCubed. She is also a member of iCubed's Racial Equity, Arts and Culture (REAC) core. 

This program is part of a series of author talks in connection with the exhibition "A Right To The City." It was developed in partnership with American University, Metropolitan Policy Center.
