June 10 | #TakeTimeThursday: Sardines and Pork-n-Beans w/ Junkyard Band

Thursday, June 10 | 2:30 – 3pm

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from DC’s own iconic go-go legends, Darrell “Blue Eye” Arrington and Vernell “Wink” Powell of the Junkyard Band! Inspired by our new outdoor exhibition, Food for the People, we’ll be talking about the origins of the classic jam, Sardines and Pork-n-Beans, and taking a moment to bring back the rhythms of 1980s DC. Tune in to keep go-go and DC’s local food culture alive!

Junkyard began in 1980 as a group of kids playing in a lot with plastic buckets, soda cans and other found objects, emulating the sounds of some of their favorite go-go bands who performed in their Southeast, DC neighborhood Barry Farms also known as "the projects". The band began to play talent shows and street performances throughout DC, taking audiences by storm - playing from the grounds of the Smithsonian and Washington Monument, to the streets of Georgetown.
