Our Healthy Market Leader position is the perfect marriage of grocery retail and food education, creating the ideal job for someone who is passionate about ensuring that communities have increased access healthy food, education supports, and joy.  

The Healthy Market Leader will be responsible for leading an energetic (no-cost) market experience, which will include, but is not limited to: coordinating food logistics and market set-up and tear-down, customer service, building and maintaining relationships with school partners and volunteers, and on-site food demonstrations to educate audiences about meal prep, how/where to access healthy food and more.  

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Responsible for ensuring a successful pop-up grocery market experience for the community, which includes:
  • Coordinating with vendors/partners for smooth and on-time grocery deliveries, setting up (and breaking down) the pop-up market so it looks good and flows well, troubleshooting issues and problems and finding solutions in real-time, well-representing the organization to the community, volunteers and donors on a regular basis.
  • Analyzing impact and effectiveness of the market logistics and experience.
  • Working closely with school leaders to build partnerships and ensure successful markets and working closely with Healthy Eating and Martha’s Table leaders to ensure markets are presented as sold to stakeholders.
  • Leading on-site food education and demo activities with children and their adult caregivers and preparing related food and demo supplies for markets.
  • Implementing high quality food distribution programs, specifically the monthly pop-up grocery market program, and our daily/as needed emergency food program.
  • Training, supervising, and managing volunteers and others performing functions during market event and food demos.
  • Ensuring departmental compliance with all laws, regulations, and permits, including those required for maintaining licenses in the District of Columbia while operating.
  • Maintaining licensing requirements, following sanitation and food preparation guidelines, and upgrading training skills as requested.
  • Working in conjunction with the Volunteer Program on training and supervision of volunteers.
  • Reviewing and adhering to program requirements, as well as assisting in the preparation of reports as required for external granters and sponsors.
  • Providing guidance and expertise in another area across the Healthy Market program, such as: research design and implementation, administration and scheduling, culinary expertise. This area to be determined based on each Market Leader's expertise, interest and the needs of the program
  • Supporting community engagement efforts within the Healthy Market Program such as partnerships, participant-led cooking demonstrations, pop-up markets at community event,, etc.
  • Participating in training and team building events.
  • Collecting and reporting program data.
  • Other duties, as needed.

Education

  • Associate’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree Preferred

Experience/Skills

  • Strong preference for those who have worked in retail/grocery setting before.
  • Excellent interpersonal, decision-making and organizational skills; positive, dynamic and proactive approach to work; strong work ethic. 
  • Excellent problem solving skills and the ability to think broadly and creatively.
  • Self-starter who thrives on collaboration across a diverse team in a demanding, fast-paced environment and is comfortable working with ambiguity.
  • Able to relate and communicate well (both in person and in writing)  in a variety of settings with multiple constituent groups.
  • Willing to learn and committed to social change.
  • Must be comfortable working with Word and Excel, Gmail.  
  • Preference given for those who have worked with different groups, such as adults, children, in the school setting and in the non-profit sector.
  • While not required, preference will be given to those either living in Wards 7 & 8 or those with experience working there.
  • Markets are held Tuesday-Friday each week (October-May) from 2pm-6pm and also during the summer (25 markets total between June, July and August) throughout Wards 7 & 8.

Licensure/Certifications   

  • Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license with a clean driving record (will be required to drive a large van).
  • Candidate must also obtain safe food handling certification within 45 days of starting.
