Ancestors, rituals, and contemporary practice are the core inspiration of Casey and White’s artistic works. Down In My Soul: Ancestors, Rituals, and Contemporary Practice, a group show from the Washington DC-based duo Asha Elana Casey and Lionel Frazier White, explores the multilayered history of Black spirituality. Lionel utilizes mixed media paint, installation, and video to speak specifically about the enduring legacies of the African cultural practices in the Black American experience. Asha approaches the topic using mixed media portraiture. Her images are imagined retellings of her journey to becoming a devotee to Ifa and the godliness of Black subjects.
