ICYMI | New policy for submitting a request for a Traffic Safety Investigation (TSI) to DDOT

Starting November 1, 2021, ANC Endorsement and a questionnaire will no longer be required to submit a Traffic Safety Investigation (TSI). DDOT will continue processing all TSIs received before November 1st and remove this tab after all TSIs currently Pending Resident Action have been cleared (approximately December 10, 2021).

When a resident reports a traffic safety concern through 311, DDOT performs a Traffic Safety Investigation to evaluate the extent of the safety issue and determine if any action is needed. DDOT's Traffic Safety Investigation program will review the request, analyze existing conditions, communicate findings with the resident, and provide a plan for safety mitigation if warranted.

Please DO use Traffic Safety Investigation 311 service requests to report issues such as:

  • Safety concerns for pedestrians, people biking, or taking transit.

  • Unmarked crosswalks that appear unsafe (Maintenance for existing markings should be put in under the 311 request, Roadway Striping / Markings).

  • Traffic safety issues around schools.

  • Lack of infrastructure such as sidewalks or crosswalks you feel could make streets safer.

  • Concerns about speeding drivers or speed limits in general (Note: DDOT's policy on speed limits is 20 MPH for local roads and may vary for Arterial and Collector roadways.

Please DO NOT use a Traffic Safety Investigation 311 service requests to report the following:

  • EMERGENCIES: Dial 9-1-1 for immediate fire, police, or medical response.

  • URGENT MAINTENANCE: Call 311 for immediate response to matters requiring urgent maintenance.

  • MAINTENANCE OF EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE: Use the 311 maintenance request type for maintenance issues related to existing Roadway Signs, Traffic Signal Issues, Sidewalk Repair, Roadway Markings, Tree Pruning, or Roadway Repair (including speed hump repair requests).

In order to start the process for a Traffic Safety Investigation service request, residents should call 311 or visit 311 online and answer all required 311 service request questions. A petition or a letter of support from their ANC commissioner is not required.
