The mission of the Department of Youth and Rehabilitation Services (DYRS) is to improve public safety and give court-involved youth the opportunity to become more productive citizens by building on the strengths of youth and their families in the least restrictive, most homelike environment consistent with public safety. DYRS administers detention, commitment and aftercare services for youth held under its care in its facilities or residing in the DC community. 

The part-time Maintenance position is located with the Department of Youth Rehabilitation’s (DYRS) Operations & Administrative Services, Facilities Maintenance Division. The Facilities Maintenance Division (FMD) is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and small construction projects for DYRS. The primary purpose of this position is to provide a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures and utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as electrical, carpentry, plumbing, plastering, and painting (if applicable). 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The part-time Maintenance incumbent is responsible for general maintenance duties required to maintain and repair all DYRS buildings mechanical systems, equipment, and structure involving some skill in plumbing, electrical, and mechanical trades. Duties include, but are not limited to: repair electrical switches, outlets, lighting systems and fixtures; repair and replacement of plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, faucets, water heaters, pipes, and clear obstructions from water and sewer lines; perform some carpentry work and assembly of furniture; preparing painting surfaces by washing walls, repairing holes, removing old paint, mixing, matching, and applying paints and finishes to various surfaces; inspect facilities to identify building maintenance needs, complete inspection and preventative maintenance reports, recommend, prioritize, and perform corrective maintenance as required; install, repair, and clean a variety of floor coverings such as carpet, tile, and linoleum; and actively participate in the positive development of other facilities maintenance team members and the development of technical knowledge of the team. 

Additionally, the incumbent typically responds to daily service calls; performs routine preventative maintenance functions for facilities and systems; sets up jobs and perform the manual labor preparation; clean, maintain, and repair fixtures, equipment, and appliances; assist in the installation of facility and systems materials, fixtures, and mechanical equipment and appliances; assists in facilities renovations and new construction; makes simple interior and exterior repairs, and makes standard furniture assembly and repairs. Incumbent is responsible for selecting the proper tools and testing devices to accomplish repairs accordingly; investigating complaints from building occupants or the general public; incumbent either corrects problems that arise from investigating complaints or notifies the Facilities Manager if a contractor is required; conducting inspections of buildings and grounds; performing snow and ice removal when necessary; performing other related duties as assigned.
