DPW services during the 4th of July Holiday

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) In observance of the 4th of July Holiday DPW will “slide” household trash and recycling collections for the remainder of the week into Saturday.      

·       The Benning Road Transfer Station is closed for renovations until further notice.                 

·      The Fort Totten Transfer Station will be closed to the public on Tuesday, July 4.  All services will resume on Wednesday, July 5 for bulk trash and recycling.  

  Parking Enforcement:          

·      All parking enforcement will be suspended on Tuesday, July 4, except for Streetcar ticketing and towing and also except for the Nationals Park neighborhood during restricted game hours. Parking enforcement will resume on Wednesday, July 5.

Beginning July 8, 2023, Special Waste Collection Events (i.e., Household Hazardous Waste, electronics recycling, and document shredding) will be relocated to RFK Stadium Lot 3, 2400 E Capitol St NE, due to the temporary closure of the Benning Road Transfer Station. Special Waste Collection Events will take place on one Thursday and one Saturday each month through March 2024. View the current schedule here

The Sidewalk Shoveling Exemption application open until October 31, 2023.   District residents who are 65 years or older and/or have a recognized medical disability, own their own property, and reside in their property are eligible.  Residents who have a medically recognized disability must provide proof of disability to be eligible.  For eligible residents, the waiver is good for two years.  Residents may apply for the Sidewalk Shoveling Exemption at dpw.dc.gov or by calling 311.   

DPW will launch the Curbside Composting Pilot Program, which will provide weekly curbside food waste collection to approximately 9,000 single-family households for one year starting later this summer. The sign-up period has ended and all selected households have been notified via email or phone by DPW's Office of Waste Diversion. These households will receive a Welcome Packet in the mail within the next couple of weeks which will include more information about the pilot program and best practices. DPW helps community groups that organize Saturday neighborhood clean-up projects through the Helping Hand Program.  The program will lend tool kits that include five rakes and brooms, two shovels, and 20 trash bags. A $20 refundable deposit is required for all tool kits loaned under the Helping Hand Program. Free compost can be picked up as well for use in neighborhood beautification projects. DPW will collect trash at the end of the clean-up.
