Spend an evening with filmmaker Byron Hurt as we watch and then discuss his thought-provoking documentary, Soul Food Junkies. Many of us enjoy foods that are based on tradition and culture but may not be the healthiest choices. In many cases, these choices have been further influenced by the food that is readily available in underserved neighborhoods. In this program, we’ll relate themes of health and culture to the movement for food justice in DC and our new exhibition "Food for the People".

This event is part of our “Right to the City” three-part film series with American University’s Policy Center and DC Public Library. The series aims to illuminate issues of equity and culture in a rapidly changing city.

Byron Hurt is an activist, lecturer, writer, and award-winning documentary filmmaker. His film Soul Food Junkies received the Best Documentary Award at the 2012 American Black Film Festival and aired on PBS’s Independent Lens in January 2013.
