Re: Parking removal on Sheriff Road NE between Minnesota Avenue NE and Eastern Avenue
Dear Chairperson Holmes:
Pursuant to the “Administrative Procedure Amendment Act of 2000” D.C. LAW 13-249 (48 DCR 3491 April 20, 2001), the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is required to give a written notice of our intent to modify traffic and/or parking requirements. This letter is being forwarded to you for the purpose of notification and solicitation of comments on our intent to implement the following modifications in your jurisdiction.
• Removal of approximately five (5) parking spaces on Sheriff Road NE between Minnesota Avenue NE and Eastern Avenue
The purpose of this project is to perform road diet by narrowing down the travel lane and enhance pedestrian and vehicular safety along a one-mile segment of Sheriff Rd, NE between Minnesota Avenue and Eastern Avenue. This project will serve as traffic calming along this segment to address the speeding issues. Proposed Safety Improvements include:
Lane re-configuration at Eastern Ave/Sheriff Rd/Division Ave, NE intersection
Installing longer island tapers to provide more visibility and guidance for lane transition
Upgrading pedestrian crossing signs
Standard parking clearance at bus stops, intersections, and fire hydrants
Installing a Driver Speed Feedback Sign (DFB) between 49th Street and 50th Place, NE
Installing an LED Pedestrian Flasher at 44th Street, NE intersection
Replacing the pedestrian refuge islands on Sheriff Road, NE with tactical curb extensions
at 44th Street, 48th Street, 48th Place, 49th Street, and 50th Place, NE intersections
District Department of Transportation | 250 M Street, SE, Washington, DC 20003 | 202.673.6813 | ddot.dc.gov
The proposed plans require removal of approximately five (5) parking spaces, in excess of the minimum parking clearance required by DCMR and DDOT Design and Engineering Manual, to accommodate the proposed roadway improvements. Each parking space is assumed to be approximately 20 feet long. The locations for the proposed parking space removals are shown in Appendix A.
All comments on this subject matter must be filed in writing by Thursday, April 28, 2022 (thirty days after the date of this notice), with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Project Delivery Administration at 250 M Street, SE, Washington, D.C. 20003. DDOT will review and evaluate comments and anticipates initiating implementation of the above-mentioned modifications starting at the end of the thirty business days, pending weather conditions.
