EAST OF THE RIVER EXHIBITION TURNS 10!
CELEBRATING 10 YEARS WITH 10 ARTISTS
July 29 - September 16 2016
  
(Washington, DC) Much has changed in Anacostia in the last decade, but Honfleur Gallery, which opened in 2007, has been stalwart in its support of artists who live, work, and have roots east of the river. This year marks the gallery's 10th anniversary of an exhibition dedicated exclusively to these artists. The gallery has assembled a retrospective of this program by inviting an artist from each of the past nine years. The show looks to the future as well by inviting an emerging new artist to the exhibition, adding up to 10 artists for 10 years.
 
East of the River Exhibition runs July 29 - September 16 at Honfleur Gallery (1241 Good Hope Road, SE, Washington DC 20020, 202-631-6291). An opening reception will be held on July 29 from 6 - 9 pm. An Artist Talk will be held on August 26 from 7-9 pm. Gallery Hours are Wednesday - Saturday from 12 - 7 pm.

The returning artists featured in the 2016 East of the River Exhibition are BK ADAMS.I AM ART, Mei Mei Chang, Wesley Clark, Jonathan French, Matthew Mann, Luis Peralta, Susana Raab, James Terrell, and Deborah Terry. The artist new to the exhibition is recent Corcoran grad Elana Casey.
 
From Wesley Clark's manipulated and marked plywood sculptures (pictured) that explore city changes, to BK ADAMS' playful bee paintings, to Mei Mei Chang's layered paper works that read as a conceptual map of the mind, the exhibition is as diverse as the artists represented. 
 
The show at once looks locally and globally. Where artists, including Clark and Terrell focus on DC life, the work of photographers Raab, Terry, and French focus on communities from other parts of the world. 
 
In a section of DC that has been viewed through such a limited lens by the media and outsiders, this exhibition may surprise some viewers by the broad range of work from talented artists for whom east of the river neighborhoods have been a source of inspiration and transcendence.
ARCH Development Corporation (the nonprofit that runs Honfleur Gallery) has a year-round commitment to east of the river artists, but East of the River Exhibition is a specific and unique platform for the vast visual arts talents that hold connections to communities in Wards 7 and 8. Since its inception, this curated gallery show has presented the work of over 75 individual artists. 
 
The 10th Anniversary of the East of the River Exhibition is made possible in part by the 11th Street Bridge Park, a fellow nonprofit with a shared vision of elevating communities east of the river. More at bridgepark.org.
