3 Millimeters explores the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where the sea level is rising at twice the global average–a process without emergency brakes. The project considers how a community’s identity, ever tied to the land, is evolving. It’s not the swift impact of a storm, but a slow drowning of a culture. These photographs depict the last breaths of a community as they are forced to adapt to the smallest but most devastating tidal wave.
Greg Kahn is an American documentary photographer living in Washington, DC. Kahn’s work concentrates on issues that shape personal and cultural identity. His work has gained much recognition over the past 10 years, including a Pulitzer Prize nomination for his project about the foreclosure crisis in Florida, “It’s Not a House, It’s a Home”.
The 3 Millimeters project is supported by the Blue Earth Alliance, an organization that supports visual storytelling about critical environmental and social issues.
