March 20 | User Error | Larry Lairson at Honfleur Gallery in Anacostia
Honfleur Gallery is proud to present User Error, the first solo exhibit by painter Larry Lairson in Washington, D.C.
The exhibit of new works opens Friday, March 20, 2015 at Honfleur Gallery, with a reception with the artist from 6-8 p.m. The gallery will host an artist-led exhibit tour on Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m.
Lairson creates his paintings with polyurethane adhesive, commonly recognized as glue. The body of work presented in User Error explores the painterly possibilities of this medium. As the adhesive cures it expands, then quickly hardens. Lairson disturbs the curing process by covering the adhesive with crumpled plastic sheeting—an unsteady mold that yields both delicate and grotesque results. In some instances he sands the work's surface to reveal a surprisingly velvet-like foam interior. These processes punctuate the uncanny synthetic aesthetic of the adhesive.
Larry Lairson was born in 1987 in Emporia, Kansas and currently lives in Washington, D.C. and works in New York.
He earned a BFA at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York. In 2010 he was awarded the Hans G. and Thordis W. Burkhardt Foundation Prize. Exhibitions include: Readymade@100, American University Museum, 2014; Between The Lines: Contemporary Drawing Now, Target Gallery, Alexandria, VA, 2013; Geometry and Color, PASS Gallery, Washington, D.C., 2012; Larry Lairson, Cooper Union, New York, NY, 2010; Walls, Cooper Union, New York, NY, 2010.
