Sheila Crider’s practice focuses on making objects that challenge notions of decorative and fine art, questioning what real value and purpose these objects and “the artist” serve in the 21st century. It is centered by study of the varied languages of art movements since Modernism to construct contemporary pictures using texture, pattern, line, color, form, sequence, and, now, volume, with a goal of integrating image, object, and frame. In Volume, she explores these ideas through monotypes and dimensional paintings. Some of Crider’s recent projects include public art for the St. Elizabeths’ East Redevelopment Project, and the Community of Hope Conway Clinic in Washington, DC. Recent group exhibitions include the Kreeger Museum and the Katzen Gallery (American University) in Washington, UMUC Gallery in Greenbelt, and Gallery Molly Krom in New York. Her work is featured in the spring 2014 issue of Studio Visit Magazine, #25. She lives and works in Washington, DC.
