REEL to Honor Local Leaders with Service Award on Tuesday, Sept. 23

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 19, 2014)—The exceptional efforts of East of the River residents, educators, businesses and others often go unnoticed as they much prefer to work silently and behind the scenes, but they are making a difference in the lives of everyday people and in the communities we call home. In recognition and appreciation of their work, River East Emerging Leaders will announce the recipients of the 2014 REEL Awards for distinguished service and outstanding achievement in community service and outreach in communities east of the Anacostia river.

The awards recognizes individuals and organizations that have demonstrated a sustained commitment to REEL's mission of engagement and empowerment through such areas as neighborhood investment; volunteerism; education; prevention of crime and youth violence; increasing access to healthcare and wellness care; improving options for food nutrition and security; bridging generational and economic divides; and raising awareness of environmental concerns.  Community members, policymakers, elected officials, business leaders, professionals, and others are expected to be in attendance.
