Washington has long had a strong film community from over 70 annual festivals (including ROSEBUD which exclusively honors DC, Maryland and Virginia filmmakers) to professional networking organizations – Women in Film and Video and DC Film Alliance to name just a couple. If you want to do a short film (or feature for that matter) in the DC Metropolitan area you can get it done. As content and delivery moves over to web and mobile devices though, how is the DMV doing on keeping up? Pretty well as it turns out, but judge for yourself at the inaugural Tube-Escent, a screening of 7 web series that are shot in DC, Maryland and Virginia on May 6 at the Anacostia Arts Center at 8:00 PM. Following the screening there will be a Q&A session with the series’ producers, writers and cast members.
The 7 series are Anacostia, b.f.a., The Broken Continent, Hamilton Carver Zombie P.I., Horse Head, No Strings Please and ParaAbnormal.
• Anacostia, shot on location in DC is produced by Anthony Anderson is about to launch its fourth season and has been nominated for numerous Indie Soap Awards. It is the story of four friends as they navigate through love, deceit, betrayal, sex and death, oh and with a season finale “that will leave your mouth open.”
• b.f.a., (Baltimore. Friends. Artists) is shot on location in Baltimore and follows four recent college grads who are trying to find their niche in the Baltimore theatre scene. b.f.a. is produced by Katie Kopajtic.
• The Broken Continent is an epic fantasy series spearheaded by Kelley Slagle. The locally shot sword and sorcery series won 6 TIVA (Television, Internet Video Association) Peer Awards in 2013.
• Hamilton Carver, Zombie P.I. started as a DC 48 Hour Film Project piece produced by Ben Cunis and Clint Herring. Not being able to keep a good undead man down the zombie p.i. soon became the star of his own undead, noir series.
• Horse Head is an art film masquerading as a science fiction narrative web series with a bit of Roger Corman excess thrown in for good measure. The series follows Horse Head, a genderfluid, intergalactic messiah/burlesque junkie and is produced by Rob Parrish with Chris Griffin.
• No Strings Please is a dark dramedy web series from Gemal Woods that follows the misadventures of Charley Parker, a young Brooklynite who’s relocated to DC for her first real job. Charley, a skilled crocheter and martial artist has an appetite for online trysts and criminal behavior.
• ParaAbnormal, produced by Jamie Nash and Ken Arnold pokes fun at the paranormal activity shows like Ghost Hunters, Ghost Lab and Scariest Places on Earth.
