This is a paid position. We would love to be able to hire a young person between the ages of 18-24 who resides in either Ward 7 or Ward 8. THEARC’s Organic Garden and Market Stand:
The Organic Garden @ THEARC was created in 2010. It has grown to 22 planting beds for herbs and vegetables, a 17-tree orchard and a hoop house. The garden provides produce for the weekly Ward 8 Farmer’s Market, held Saturday’s at THEARC from June - November. THEARC operates a stand at the market with produce from the garden.
Position Description:
Under the direction of the Garden Manager and the Market Manager, the garden and market staff persons are responsible for tending the organic garden, the hoop house, and the orchard, keeping the area clean and productive. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, planting, weeding, composting, pest control, pruning, and harvesting crops. Garden associate will help keep the all garden grounds manicured, harvest and prepare produce for the market days, maintain documentation on garden crops and activities, and assist in construction projects and help manage social media outreach via photos and blogs. The garden associate will be expected to assist with community day activities, serve as a guide to the garden for visitors and educate visitors to the values of a healthy diet. The garden assistants will work in tandem and report directly to the Garden Manager, and to the Executive Director. The Market Staff is responsible for set-up and take-down of the market stand, and operation of market stand during market hours. Staff will organize produce for sale, set pricing, develop market materials, engage market patrons, complete sales of produce, and track and record market sales.
Details:
Two positions –
1) 8 hours/week - Saturday 7a-3p
2) 12 hours/week – Tuesday 1-5p, Friday and Saturday 9a–1p
Compensation: $10.00/hour
Term: June 1, 2014 – November 30, 2014
Qualifications:
We are looking for an enthusiastic, responsible, and self-motived individual interested in learning about gardening and healthy eating. Candidate must be punctual, well organized, enjoy working outdoors, and able to follow instructions and work independently. Position requires manual labor, some heavy lifting, and interaction with bugs and dirt. Regular interaction with the community is required so ideal candidate must be comfortable engaging with garden visitors and the public. No previous garden experience is required.
Ideal candidate would meet the following specifications:
• Resident of Wards 7 or 8 in Washington, D.C.
• Between the ages of 18-24
• High school diploma or GED preferable
