Poor individuals and families are not evenly distributed across communities or throughout the country. Alan Berube of Brookings discusses the impacts of this concentrated poverty. Extremely poor neighborhoods are often home to higher crime rates, underperforming public schools, poor housing and health conditions, as well as limited job opportunities. The bad news is that concentrated poverty has increase 41% in some area over the last decade.

Alan Berube, a co-author of a new Brookings study, says the rate of poverty in areas of concentrated poverty grew by nearly 40% between 2000 and 2005. Berube notes that concentrated poverty largely plagues America's inner cities even as more poor people are moving into suburban areas.
