WAMU 88.5 News seeks citizens for network of sources to inform local news coverage

Washington—WAMU 88.5 News announced today that it will partner with American Public Media’s Public Insight Network (PIN), a platform for connecting trusted journalists with knowledgeable individuals and for fostering journalistic excellence, innovation and collaboration. Through PIN, more than 140,000 sources inform reporting through websites, social networks, blogs, surveys, virtual forums, serious games and face-to-face interactions.
WAMU 88.5 News will use PIN to cultivate a pool of local sources made up of a wide range of community members with varied experiences and perspectives. Individuals who volunteer to serve as sources for WAMU 88.5 News will complete a brief profile, listing demographic information about themselves and details about their areas of interest and expertise. Sources will then become part of the network, providing them with the opportunity to inform WAMU 88.5 News and other newsrooms in the Public Insight Network.

Based on the details provided in their profiles, individuals will receive queries from reporters and editors looking for background information and sources to be interviewed in stories. Access to PIN, and the meaningful input from sources within the network, will assist WAMU 88.5 News in producing news content that is accurate, inclusive and reflective of the diverse communities in the region. WAMU 88.5 News will also look to sources in the network to provide new angles on coverage, and ideas for new stories relevant to listeners in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
