January Solos in Anacostia

Three solo exhibitions open to the public this month in historic Anacostia: works by Jordan Kasey and Eric Finzi will be in view at Honfleur Gallery and photographic works by Chajana denHarder will be at The Gallery at Vivid Solutions, opening Friday, January 14, 2011 at 7pm.

A space for the transitory at The Gallery at Vivid Solutions is a new exhibition of photography by interdisciplinary artist Chajana denHarder. Chajana denHarder uses photography, performance, and interactive installations to investigate change in form and the assimilation of her body as it connects with other objects, people, and moments. In this exhibition she is simultaneously photographer, subject, and model. The artist explains, “I am always trying to disappear in an attempt to dissociate and “let go”. I know the image I take is nearing completion when I no longer identify the body as my own.” Her process involves merging with her subject on film, then editing herself out of the images: dissolving the connection, dissolving space. Each photograph walks the line between reality and fiction: questioning what is manipulated and what is real.

During the January 14 opening, the artist will invite the audience to eat a life-sized bread sculpture of a tree. This act is an extension of the photographs and is an attempt to merge with the audience by inviting them to eat from the sculpture in a mass participatory experience.

Chajana denHarder was born in the red light district of Amsterdam. She received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and has exhibited nationally and internationally. The exhibition, at The Gallery at Vivid Solutions, 2208 Martin Luther King Jr Ave SE, 20020 is open Tuesdays to Fridays,12-5pm and Saturdays 11-5pm. This event is free and open to the public.

New Works by Jordan Kasey at Honfleur Gallery is a collection of the artists most recent large scale oil paintings. Jordan Kasey is an emerging artist living in Baltimore, Maryland. Her large scale paintings are surreal oil on canvas landscapes and portraits. She grew up in the Chicago area and moved to Baltimore in 2004 to study painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). She graduated in December 2007 and currently works as an art handler.

In 2010, Kasey received the Individual Artist Grant in Painting from the Maryland State Arts Council. Kasey feels as though her work has a true voice, one that may even overpower her own. “I like to let my paintings do most of the talking. Painting for me is an intuitive, meditative process. Once they’re completed, they are nothing more than each individual’s experience with them.”

The exhibition, at Honfleur Gallery, 1241 Good Hope Road SE, W DC 20020 is open Tuesdays to Fridays, 12-5pm and Saturdays 11-5pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Also at Honfleur Gallery, Eric Finzi’s show Controversial Characters of Portraits Past is a collection of works in resin from three series. Finzi, a dermatological surgeon, uses syringes, propane torches and other nontraditional tools to create epoxy resin paintings. The exhibition includes works from multiple series Augustine, Down the Rabbit Hole, and Sarah Bernhardt. The Augustine series centers around a girl in the 1800's in Paris, who was institutionalized, subject to shock treatments and eventually dressed up like a boy and escaped. In the Down the Rabbit Hole series Finzi explores writer and logician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson’s (known as Lewis Carroll) staged photographs of children. According to Andrea Pollan, “At times the intensity and extraordinary emotional weight of the children’s gazes discomforts the viewer. Simultaneously innocent yet mature, they project a provocative engagement and relationship with the photographer.” The Sarah Bernhardt series looks to the infamous French actress- Finzi was impressed by “her talent, lifelong artistic dedication, savvy management skills, and proto-feminist way of life.”

Eric Finzi’s show is curated by Cheri Landry, founding director of Divergence Fine Art, a Baltimore based fine art consulting firm. Landry is the former Director of Gallery Imperato and has been a guest speaker at Towson University, American University, and the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Baltimore Women's Group. DFA emerged in 2010, providing support and guidance to artists and collectors and continuing curatorial projects. http://www.divergencefineart.com.
