Last Thursday, The Advoc8te had the pleasure of visiting the Bread for the City's Anacostia location and it was very inspiring.  Greg Bloom, Development Associate, and the very enthusiastic Sherita Evans, SE Outreach Coordinator (and a former BFTC client), took me on a tour of the facility, introduced me to the staff, explained BFTC's services to the community and how they apply a individual approach to helping their clients.

Bread for the City's clients come from all over the city and they take referrals as well as walk-ins.  Client needs range from food, housing, clothing, legal services, medical assistance, and sometimes just a caring ear and open heart. Through a series of donations, programs, volunteers, and partnerships Bread for the City is able to provide a variety of services for men, women , and children who come through their doors.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Sylvia Ford, a delightful and dedicated BFTC volunteer who runs the Bread for the City Clothing Closet (AKA "The Boutique) which takes clothing donations and provides clothing free of charge to those in need.  The Clothing Closet is open for walk-ins Monday thru Friday, 10am - 2pm at the Anacostia location. From everything from job interviews, to social events, the Clothing Closet provides free clothes, in a setting of respect and excitement for those in need.  I was so moved by their commitment that after our meeting I went home, bagged up eight bags of clothes and made my first donation! Normally, at the end of December I find myself driving out to the Good Will in Arlington to make my last-minute end of the tax year donations, now I can make a contribution for my community, in my community and best of all the donations are offered free to those in need. If you are so moved, I highly recommend making a food, clothing, or monetary donation to Bread for the City (donations are tax-deductible).  Better still give the ultimate gift and volunteer your time! The Historic Anacostia location offers a variety of services, and programs to members of the community in need such as their food pantry.  To learn more about Bread for the City visit their website or their blog.
