7. NAME 1 THING YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED IN YOUR SINGLE MEMBER DISTRICT THIS PAST TERM.
I have successfully opened Savoy Elementary School in Sept. 2008 – 25 Million Dollar Renovation as a Board Member of the project. I have also helped to break ground on Sheridan Station a 110 million dollar housing development in 8C-01t. I have also held 2 Town Hall Meeting for SMD 8C-01as well as, 2 “Operation Fix It” in the community with a partnership the Mayors Office (Eaton Rd., Howard Rd)
8. NAME 1 THING YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED IN YOUR COMMISSION THIS PAST TERM
I filed 8 Quarterly Reports resulting in over 20,000 dollars in Allotments for 8C during my stint as treasurer. I also passed a Resolution from the 2009 Audit of ANC 8C, saving the Commission and Community over 24,000 dollars. Lastly I think I have helped to inspired community involvement through transparency with Meeting Minutes, Quarterly Reports, Budgets, and the requesting of an Audit of ANC 8C in 2009.
9. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU WOULD LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH IN THE NEXT TERM
Community Grants!!!! – Focus on Elementary Schools and Neighborhood Watch Programs. It is my goals, to help fund all Public Elementary Schools Parent Teach Student Assoc. (PTSA) in Ward 8 with community grants of 10,000 per year giving by each the 5 ANC’s in the Ward. With 50,000 in grants per year I believe that our kids will receive much needed help with Books, College Field Trips to local Universities, Mentoring, and tutoring.
10. YOU CAN ALSO INCLUDE A PARAGRAPH NO MORE THAN 300 WORDS ON ANYTHING YOU LIKE REGARDING YOUR TERM OR CAMPAIGN.
“Education then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the conditions of men.” We all know that the greatest gift one can receive in life is education. Education halts poverty, quiets racism, and it is education that kills crime. For we owe it to our sons and daughters to provide them with an education beyond high school, an education that is beyond the District, an education that is sort after, rejoiced in, and applauded around the country.
For too long, DC has excelled in mediocrity in its school, crime in its streets, and Black Men in its prisons. Somehow we, residents of DC have been caught up in the sorrows of today, and not the gift/promises of tomorrow. Kids today would rather work midnight hours on the corner selling drugs, than to stay up late studying for a test. Kids would rather spend their money on a video game or a Coach bag, than on a calculator or science fair. Even parents today, will celebrate a jump shot, over a B in geometry. Parents encourage their kids to study the coach’s playbook, but not the Periodic Table. A Grandmother once told me, “When did being poor become an excuse for not learning.” As a race we have always risen above it all. With no freedom, we gave the world Frederick Douglass, with no civil rights, we gave the world Dr. King, and with no peace, we have again given the world President Barack Obama.
I ask residents of ANC 8C-01 do not vote for me because I am your neighbor or friend. Vote for me because you believe in my message, my leadership, my morals, and my sense of obligation to serve our community. For as Dr. King said, “Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve!” So can our community and our children!
Thank you!
William R. Ellis
