OBJECTIFIED:
The domestication of the industrial

Opening Reception: June 4th, 6:30pm

Running from June 4th to July 23rd in the main gallery space at Honfleur Gallery, the exhibition Objectified takes a look at work by four different artists who translate concept to object, using philosophical approach and industrial or non-traditional crafting. Using disparate and non- traditional materials, the artists address questions of materiality of artwork touching on a ‘medium versus message’ debate.

Jeanne Jo, whose background ranges from hardcore screamer to RISD trained digital artist, focuses on “the stereotypically gendered” through, amongst other things, the “abstraction of craft practices.” The artist’s position is articulated in the piece “If a mouth were to whisper,” in which she develops coding from personal correspondence into a crochet pattern. Robert Longyear sources his materials, both physical and conceptual, from abandoned structures in his St. Louis neighborhood. The resulting work reveals not just his technical rigor as a metal-smith, but pinpoints issues of society, politics, circumstantial geography and physicality.

Both artists Andrea Miller and Colleen Heineman come from a jewelry background. Miller’s work mimics easily recognizable industrial components and plays with notions of scale and the wearability of the hand-made objects intersecting with the human body. Likewise, Heineman uses utilitarian or pedestrian materials, but repositions them via scientific investigations. Her sculptural installations emphasise order and systems.

According to Islay Taylor, the exhibit’s curator, “Allowing for a physical object to become the final vessel indicative of an arduous creative process emphasizes the complex status of that object.”

Objectified will challenge viewers to see materials and ideas transformed through the drastic alteration of the familiar.
