Barry to Ward 8 Democrats: King Kong Don't Have Nothing On Me!

In my opinion (and in the ever growing opinion of folks in the community), anything less than an immediate demand by the Ward 8 Democrats for a recall of CM Barry is a cop-out - plain and simple. The feeling from those of us on the outside looking in is that the Ward 8 Democrats leadership is torn between actually holding Barry accountable and just looking like they are holding Barry accountable.

There is a belief in Ward 8 that certain poverty pimps community leaders don't want to take a public stand against Barry because they may need Barry's blessing (and campaign contributors) in the event the Ward 8 Council seat is eventually up for grabs. This hope on its face is flawed because Marion Barry's popularity (no matter how misguided) is not transferrable. What Marion Barry has been able to get away with, the ordinary pimp person on the street won't, and time and time again Barry has proven that he will not hesitate to turn on those who were most faithful to him. If there is "no crying in baseball" then there is "no loyalty in Ward 8 politics."

Most of these self-professed "community leaders" are nothing more than well-placed pawns in the Marion Barry game. Part of the insanity in all of this reluctance in publicly and clearly condemning Barry's ongoing campaign of corruption is that there are at least FOUR members in the Ward 8 leadership who have either run against Barry for the Ward 8 Council seat and/or publicly condemned him in the press for some professional violation or corruption. It makes no sense when you consider this as a simple issue of a violation of the public trust and a criminal issue (because at the end of the day the law was broken). It becomes much more complicated (and accounts in part for the hesitation) when you factor in the political angle. Community leaders jockeying to become the next "Mayor for Life" when in fact they are struggling to even address this current scandal, an example in simple black and white of the worst crimes of the ultimate "poverty pimp" - crimes against the very community they were sworn to protect and serve. How can you support a leader when they seem so hesitant to do what's right?

It's all just so unbelievable, sad, and outrageous. Just another example of how overall Ward 8 "leadership" is indeed in a sad state of affairs - right where Barry wants them -in his pocket.

By refusing to even attend the Ward 8 Democrats Executive Meeting to discuss these serious issues Barry let the Ward 8 Democrats know exactly what he thought of them - nothing.  Does Barry really deserve their loyalty? Or respect?

Will the "new and improved" leadership of Ward 8 please stand up?
