Big Chair Coffee opens today at 7am! Post your reviews of River East's FIRST coffee shop!
January 11, 2010 at 7am, BIG CHAIR COFFEE officially opens for business and River East will finally have its FIRST coffee shop! Woohoo!
The River East community and blogosphere has been abuzz in anticipation of this grand opening. And Now Anacostia, Barry Farm (re)Mixed, Southeast Socialite, Anacostia Yogi, The Penn Brangler and of course Congress Heights on the Rise have all featured posts about the grand opening of Big Chair Coffee. To say we are excited is an understatement. Already breakfast plans have been made, lunch dates have been set, after work coffee get togethers have been coordinated at Big Chair Coffee in Historic Anacostia. The people have spoken and boy do they support this business. If BCC (that’s slang for Big Chair Coffee) can live up to the hype (and my coffee stirrer points to “yes”) then it has a great shot at being the social center in Ward 8 and possibly River East in general. River East residents can finally say “meet me for coffee" and not have to travel across the Anacostia to do it.
Now if we can finally get a bookstore…and a bakery…and an ice cream parlor…and a martini bar…and a casual dining restaurant…and a pet supply store…and a video rental shop…and an internet café…and a yoga studio…and a sports bar…and a Kinkos…and a movie theater…and an arcade…and a bowling alley…and a roller skating rink...and a flower shop…the list goes on and on.
Today the East of the River community can finally enjoy what the rest of the city takes for granted, a place to sit and chat with our friends while enjoying a savory cup of coffee.
It’s called “progress” and whether it occurs one sip or one cup at a time it is happening and we have to remain committed to push forward lest we slip back.
If you have a chance to visit Big Chair Coffee located in Historic Anacostia please include your comments and reviews below. Please include the date and time of your visit and what you purchased. In the meantime, let’s show our online support by following Big Chair Coffee on Twitter. Let’s show the rest of the city what we already know - that quality businesses can thrive in River East!
P.S. For those media outlets pick up on this blog post for their news stories a couple of things: (1) Big Chair Coffee is located in the Historic Anacostia neighborhood, just mentioning "Southeast" isn't going to cut it, (2) please find new adjectives (possibly positive) besides "poor" to describe Historic Anacostia and Ward 8 in general - last time I checked "poor" people still ate and drank and deserved even basic services and retail options, (3) "River East" is here to stay...you may not understand it or even like it but it's a option that many of us are using when describing this area, you can keep bashing it but it looks like it's here to stay...and for good reason, (4) and probably the most important - if you are going to include a picture of the area please make sure it is a photo of Historic Anacostia and NOT The Yards (Fox 5 needs to invest in a map).
