The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority plans to spend $7.5 million to clean about half its stations between January 2010 and June 2011.

The improvements include washing and painting walls, refinishing station platforms and pressure washing ceilings and walls. The cleaning work at each state will take 20 to 90 days.

Metro cleans its stations every four years under a station enhancement program initiated in April 1991.

The first round of cleaning, from January to June 2010, will include the Metrorail stops at Medical Center, Bethesda, Wheaton, Forest Glen, Potomac Avenue, Friendship Heights, Woodley Park-Zoo Adams Morgan, Smithsonian, Foggy Bottom, U Street, Ballston-MU, Court House, Virginia Square-GMU, White Flint, Franconia-Springfield, Brookland-CUA, West Falls Church, East Falls Church, Shady Grove, Rockville and Twinbrook.

The second set of stations slated for work includes Rhode Island Avenue, Fort Totten, West Hyattsville, Prince George’s Plaza, College Park, Addison Road, Congress Heights, Southern Avenue, Pentagon, Glenmont, Union Station, Judiciary Square, Gallery Place, Metro Center, Farragut North, Dupont Circle, Tenleytown, Naylor Road, Suitland, Branch Avenue and Deanwood.

Metro will do most of the cleaning at night after the system has closed.
