MARKUS BATCHELOR: Congress Heights Resident, Youth Mayor of DC and Rising Star!

Back on August 7th, the nearly 500 young people of the Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI) elected Markus Batchelor, a Congress Heights resident and native, the 52nd Youth Mayor of the District of Columbia. He was sworn into office on November 9th by Mayor Fenty.

Markus Batchelor is a junior at the School for Ethics and Global Leadership (SEGL) in the Dupont Circle neighborood. After finishing his semester-long program at the School for Ethics, he will return to Thurgood Marshall Academy PCHS in Anacostia.

Before being elected 52nd Youth Mayor of the District of Columbia by five votes out the almost 500 cast in August 2009, he served as Deputy Youth Mayor for Community Outreach under the administration of 51st Youth Mayor Kanesha Overton (Ward 7) beginning in August 2008.

In the summer of 2009, Markus Batchelor ran one of the closest races in MYLI history against Incumbant Kanesha Overton. Running on the campaign slogan "Our Time Now", Markus gave visions of a more involved Youth, within their communities, government and city.

Now,as Youth Mayor, Markus strives toward this goal with the assistance of his cabinet, insuring a brighter future for DC Youth.
