TOMORROW: Wed Oct 7th @ 6:30pm - ANC 8C Monthly Meeting
It's that time of the month again. The Advisory Neighborhood Commission 8C monthly meeting. The Advoc8te did send an email to Commissioner William Ellis and Commissioner Dion Jordan last week requesting a copy of the agenda for tomorrow night's meeting but so far has not received a response. Also, The Advoc8te hasn't heard of any residents receiving fliers to tomorrow's meeting either.
Therefore without a meeting agenda (once again) we are left with pure speculation on what tomorrow night's ANC meeting may be about. My guess on what might be on tomorrow's agenda will be a review of the ANC 8C annual budget. If you recall two meetings ago ANC 8C attempted to approve the annual budget (the first of many, many, many years) without sharing any of the details of the $27,000 budget with residents and without allowing residents an opportunity to comment on the budget - a direct violation of ANC law which requires community comments and concerns to be addressed before an ANC budget is voted on.
In September's ANC 8C meeting the Commission requested to have the owner of the two vacant properties at 3006 and 3010 MLK Avenue SE to appear at the meeting as well as the owner of the Newcomb Street Child Development Center. The former is requesting a building variance and the latter an increase in the number of children can occupy the center.
One thing I am sure is NOT going to be on the agenda is the 2009 Audit of ANC 8C that was completed a few months ago and which was released in early September. In the audit report the DC Auditor expressed serious concerns over ANC 8C finances and operations and even made the recommendation to withhold over $24,000 in unapproved rent payments (which the Auditor concluded was a waste of ANC funds) from the next ANC allotment. In September's ANC 8C meeting "Chairpeson" Cuthbert was adamant about not discussing the DC Auditor's report at all including the Auditor's findings or recommendations - despite the fact that several parts of the audit required that the issues be resolved in a public ANC 8C meeting.
The Advoc8te is also pretty sure that there will be no mention of the SOME project on Mellon Street that is slated to begin construction any day now.
No word yet if "Chairperson" Cuthbert has plans to deliver on her promise of my beat down but to be on the safe side The Advoc8te will be sure to carry her insurance card.
Residents, property owners and interested parties of ANC 8C (and Ward 8 in general) are encouraged to come out to tomorrow night's meeting. Please ask questions, get involved and demand more.
