DC Produce Co-operative a great way to get your "freggies"!
Great things have been showing up in my inbox. Here's another. It's so great to see so many new options to eat healthy in River East! Please check them out!
Greetings,
My name is Tanikka Cunningham and I am co-founder and Executive Director of Healthy Solutions (
healthysolutionsgroup.org). My sister, LaTisha Watford, and I started this non-profit organization to help with food access in wards 7 and 8 and we would love to have all of Ward 7 and 8 as a part of our family! We run food co-ops that offer fresh organic fruits and vegetables directly from farms – near and far. (From far, only when things, for example citrus, are not grown locally) We bring them into the community and offer them at wholesale cost to community members. The name of the program is DC Produce Co-operative (www.producecoop.com).
We have recently been accepted in public housing as a service provider where we will be offering cooking and nutrition classes. We will offer our freggie boxes(fresh fruits and veggies) and we will be making a box which includes all organic, natural, and local products - graining, eggs, milk, and fresh foods.
The Co-op currently functions every first and third Saturday of each month year round, we are considering adding Tuesdays to be able to reach a broader audience. We presently have pick-up locations at 447 Valley SE, Secrets of Nature Health Food Store, Ft. DuPont Ice Arena, and run the farmers market at Riverside Center, but we are always looking for Partners to host new/additional pick-up locations.
We are always looking to make it easier for the community to reap the benefits of the co-op and to that end we are getting certified for EBT(SNAP) which allows more members of the community to participate in the Cooperative.
Our long term goals are to have created a large community based food system that would allow members of ward 7 and 8 to have access to affordable organic fresh fruits and vegetables at multiple locations. This would allow east of the river to have access to foods that we deserve and build a stronger and healthier community.
