SINGLE MEMBER DISTRICT 8C02 COMMUNITY FORUM - A Community Success

Wed, Feb 25th approximately twenty 8C02 residents and business owners came out for a community meeting to discuss the progress and change this is coming to the 8C02 community.

Commissioner Dion Jordan (8C02) coordinated this community forum, the first of a series of monthly meetings for 8C02 residents and business owners. The purpose of these meetings are to provide a safe, respectful and honest forum for residents, city leaders and business owners to have a diaologue on community needs and initiatives.

This meeting was significant for several reasons. First, it was the first community meeting specific for SMD 8c02 and second, the meeting was conducted in the spirit of "togetherness and progress". Last nights meeting reflected the overall change in philosphy that is being experienced in the River East community. No more of the days of ineffective and combative meetings. Last nights meeting was professional, polite and most importantly proactive. Many residents spoke of taking accountability to make positive, long lasting changes.

Why this forum was coordinated specifically with 8C02 residents in mind non residents of 8C02 are welcome to attend and partake in the exchange of ideas and information.

Speakers from last night's meeting included Commissioner Jordan (ANC 8C02), Commander Joel Maupin (7D), Diane Oliver (DC Housing Authority), Director Ritchie McKeithen (Office of Tax and Revenue) and representatives from the DC Tax Office Customer Care team.

The meeting was very informative with information being provided regarding citizen safety initatives including the Third Watch program; compliance with the Housing Choice Vouchers Program (formerly known as Section 8); the impact of increased property values on property tax assessments and how to appeal assessments; in addition to how to avoid common mistakes when completing your federal and state returns and where you can have your taxes filed for free.

Please come out (and bring your neighbors) to the next 8C02 community meeting which will always be held the LAST Wednesday of the month at the UPO Petey Greene Center from 7 - 8:30pm. Next meeting will be held March 25th at 7pm.
