NO DEAL FOR BARRY
The Advocate has always felt that public officials should be held to a higher standard and as such The Advocate feels that it is high time for Councilman Barry to face the consequences for his actions (or lack thereof in filing his tax forms). In this case it's not even a higher standard - its the most basic of standards. The same law that would be applied to you and me needs to be applied to him.
The Advocate is joining And Now, Anacostia by calling on those in Ward 8 who are sick and tired of Marion Barry's antics and lawlessness to finally put an end to it by contacting the Assistant US Attorney and the Magistrate Judge in this case. It's unclear what would happen to the Ward 8 seat if Councilman Barry goes to jail but anything would be better at this point. Perhaps Ward 8 would finally elect a competent, law abiding and undistracted Council person? We can hope.
Please contact Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Zeno at 202-514-6957 to voice your support to finally hold Marion Barry accountable for yet again violating his probation.
You can also contact U.S. magistrate Judge Deborah Robinson and let her know that Marion Barry needs to be treated like any other person who failed to file 8 of their last 9 tax returns on time despite being on probation for failure to file tax returns for 7 years and over $500,000 worth of earnings.
Councilman Barry earns $115,000 a year from his position on the City Council and that salary is paid for by DC taxes. We pay taxes so he can be paid a salary and he doesn't feel the need to file and/or pay his taxes. It's hypocrisy at it's worst.
It's not fair and its not the behavior of a responsible councilman and it's time it stopped - permanently.
