WASHINGTON -- Closed bridges, impassable roads in the downtown core of D.C., crowded Metro trains -- maybe it's time to start thinking about the bus.
Metro leaders are working to create 23 special "Presidential" bus corridors that can quickly funnel Metrobuses into and out of the downtown core of the city on Jan. 20.

"Taking Metrobus is a good option for people who are located beyond a two-to-three mile walking distance to the National Mall because they may not be able to get on a crowded Metro train in or just outside the District," Metro General Manager John Catoe said Thursday.
The Metrobuses will offer modified service on their routes and will operate at rush hour levels from 4 a.m. until 9 p.m. for the inauguration. The buses will be able to cross bridges that are otherwise closed to regular traffic, and will be able to operate on streets in the downtown section of D.C.

There will be 23 routes in all.
