Job Summary

This position is located at D.C Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, Detained Services Administration, Secure Detention Division. The purpose of Detained Services Administration, Secure Detention Division is to provide a safe environment and support and rehabilitation for the youth to ensure a timely return to the community. The youth must meet behavioral codes as stipulated by court orders as well as the Youth Services Center Code of Conduct. Therefore, in servicing the needs of the youth, this position is developed to assist in maintaining the physical and/or mental health rehabilitation of the youth.

Duties and Responsibilities 

The Recreational Specialist will be responsible for providing recreational activities such as basketball, flag football, volleyball, and other various outdoor and indoor activities. The incumbent will facilitate these activities, as well as, special events within our secured facilities. The Recreational Specialist will coordinate, supervise, and implement the provision of the recreation program consistent with the philosophy, goals, and commitment of the Administration. Additionally, the incumbent will plan, organize, direct and coordinate a comprehensive recreation program requiring major adaptation due to 'the diverse economic, ethnic and cultural background, recreation interest, needs and abilities of the participants.

The Recreational Specialist must continuously evaluate effectiveness of ongoing activities from the perspective of participant response, resources, program objectives, and unforeseen developments, adapts and varies program in consideration of findings. The incumbent must provide guidance counseling and leisure counseling services to residents and adapt, expand, or change plans and procedures for scheduled recreation activities, and introducing new activities in order to enable residents to put counseling into action. The incumbent must monitor such activities to ensure that essential "coping" skills and other results sought are fully being achieved.
