This position is located in the Office of the State Superintendent (OSSE), Division of Student Transportation (DOT). The mission of OSSE DOT is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services that positively support learning opportunities for eligible students from the District of Columbia.
Duties and responsibilities
The primary purpose of the Bus Attendant position is to ensure students are transported from their designated pick-up/drop off address safely, reliably, efficiently, and with exceptional customer service.
Safety: As a champion of safety best practices, the Bus Attendant ensures seat belts, wheelchairs, and supports are secure so that necessary safety and/or medical equipment does not shift during transportation. The incumbent ensures students stay in their seats and reports problems to appropriate management and schools and/or seeks emergency medical help when necessary. The Bus Attendant provides support and instruction to students while on the bus to ensure their understanding and compliance with bus safety and disciplinary rules. When necessary, the incumbent implements approved applicable behavior management plans and moves about the bus to attend to student needs. Performs CPR and Frist Aid as needed.
Efficiency: As a team member and support, assists the drivers with morning inspections and maintains cleanliness of the bus. Assists the driver with reverse operation of the bus which can require exiting the bus and providing hand signals and other appropriate forms of guidance.
Customer Focus: Communicates clearly, effectively, and positively with the driver, parents and guardians and school personnel about student needs. The incumbent maintains contact with OSSE dispatchers on the status of student locations and timeframes for drop-offs, so that they are able to notify parents with timeliness and accuracy.
Reliability: Assists drivers with submitting reports. Acts as point of contact for officials regarding accidents and written reports. Follows OSSE DOT policies and procedures and the National Standards for School Buses and School Bus Operations. Participates in pre-service trainings and engages in ongoing training sessions as directed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
