The Director, Healthy Market Program plays a big role in shaping the strategy and vision of this innovative program, which will ultimately improve access to and consumption of healthy food by families in DC, and especially in Wards 7 & 8. The Director will develop and direct the implementation of a strategic plan for healthy markets, including the Joyful Food Market Program, as well as engage internal and external stakeholders and program partners for feedback while championing impact and innovation in our work and communities of interest.

Joyful Food Markets is one of the signature and most impactful programs at Martha’s Table. Four years ago, Martha’s Table embarked on a journey to address the lack of access to high quality, fresh produce and pantry items in the elementary schools of two of the most vulnerable communities in the District of Columbia. In addition to access, we also wanted families to increase consumption of healthy foods while reinforcing the message that eating healthy can taste good and be a fun and enjoyable experience. Rather than bore people with lectures on why eating healthy matters, we decided to create fun-filled, joyful markets in environments filled with the sound of music and the smell of delicious, tasty foods. An environment where children and families could shop at no-cost for fresh produce and pantry items; children could assist our market leaders in preparing healthy foods and snacks while learning more about healthy eating and lifestyle practices; sample delicious, easy to prepare, healthy foods and change health outcomes for children and families. The Director, Healthy Market Program leads the effort to create and promote food access, education, and community in a FUN, ENGAGING, and JOYFUL manner.
