Washington DC, East of the River, has a thriving literary community of readers and writers. Join us on June 12, 2018 from 6:30PM to 8:00PM at MahoganyBooks for an engaging evening of dialouge and camaraderie amongst us book lovers.

At the root of the MahoganyBooks & Duende District collaborative partnership is the belief that books written for, by, or about people of color from all areas of the globe are an essential element to remembering our erased histories and empowering ourselves to resist, rebuild, and rise as one. Our community book discussions offer the opportunity for African Americans, Latinx, and other ethnicities to come together to discuss themes of race, social justice, history, gender equality, education, empowerment, and the actions that can be taken to improve our respective communities and appreciation for each other.

In recognition of Juneteenth, MahoganyBooks and Duende District (MBxDD) invite you out to discuss Zora Neale Hurston’s posthumously published title, Barracoon: The Story of the Last “Black Cargo”.  For the last month readers have had a variety of opinions and emotions about this book. Whether it’s the circumstances surrounding Kossula’s capture and enslavement or Hurston’s insistence on writing in Kossula’s dialect, people are understandably eager to express themselves about what they’ve just read. No worries…we’ve got you!
