This position is located in the Apparatus/Fleet Maintenance Division of the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (DCFEMS). Our Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanics work under the general direction of the foreman and receives daily direction either orally or by shop repair order. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Repairs aerial ladders and the related hydraulic raising mechanisms. Checks and adjust relief valves; adjusts cables; rebuilds hoists; replaces seals and rings and adjust controls. Adjusts and lubricates tiller wheels, repair electrical attachments such as warning horn, spotlights, starter, and throttle adjust steering, including tiller assemblies and brake systems (air and hydraulic). Replaces defective water, air, and vacuum tanks, and connecting related plumbing. Uses diagnostic equipment to retrieve data from on-board computer to analyze and repair engine, transmission, and anti-lock brake systems. Uses computer software to retrieve data from a database of vehicle information to aid in the diagnosis and repair of vehicle and equipment. Participates in annual pump and aerial ladder tests as the Fleet Management Division’s representative. Repairs and overhauls special fire extinguishing units which deploy foam, dry chemical, and light water in large volumes. Uses diagnostic equipment to retrieve data from on-board computer to analyze and repair engines, transmissions and anti-lock brake systems.
